The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that about 75% of the waste produced in the US is recyclable; yet the actual recycling rate is only 34%, and the average recycling contamination rate is 25%—one in every four items. Even more, when one item is improperly put into a recycling bin, it can cause contamination, which means the whole bin may be discarded. We want to do everything we can to make sure you have the information you need to ensure our packaging actually gets recycled.

Why We Use PCR

We are open and honest about our packaging choices. PCR stands for Post Consumer Recycled or Post Consumer Resin. Rather than just recycled materials, it is specifically plastic that was once a consumer product that has been recycled. By investing in PCR we're investing in the recycling system and aiding towards creating a more circular economy.

Hair care products are larger in size than many other personal care and beauty products, and they must also be functional and safe in a wet environment. Therefore, there are challenges with heavy materials and easily breakable materials that are considered ‘more sustainable’ like glass or aluminum. Lighter weight materials also require less resources in the manufacturing and shipping process, thereby lowering our carbon emissions.

All materials have an environmental impact, and PCR is the safest progression for our packaging. We will continue to look for new solutions that meet both our community needs and our work towards a more sustainable future.

Our Packaging Journey

We are committed to constant innovation in our packaging to help reduce our impact on our shared planet. And while our journey is constantly evolving to deepen our sustainability mission, we’ve already taken great strides to increase our reusability and recyclability.

We opt for 100% post-consumer recycled materials, with a minimum of at least 50%, to limit the creation of new virgin plastic and support recycling.

We specifically use PCR HDPE, a recyclable plastic, because it is one of the most readily available recyclable plastics with one of the highest values for collection.
