Your Clean Hair Care Ingredients Questions Answered

You asked, we answered! Here are a few commonly asked questions right from you, our community, about our clean hair care ingredients. Is there something you want to ask us? Email us at [email protected] with CLEAN HAIR CARE INGREDIENTS in the subject title.

CAN OIL BE USED ON ALL HAIR TYPES? HOW DO I KNOW IT’S FOR ME?

If an oil feels heavy in your hands, it will be heavy in your hair! That’s a good rule of thumb. Different oils benefit different hair types. As heavier oils in common hair care tend to be adulterated or infused with other ingredients, choose lighter oils like tamanu, monoi, avocado and pumpkin seed which dissipate and absorb easily into the hair.

YOU SAY HARMONIC TREATMENT OIL ABSORBS EASILY INTO THE SCALP AND SKIN. WHAT CLEAN HAIR CARE INGREDIENTS ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN?

Tamanu Oil! Its absorbability is why we love this incredible oil. It soothes dry scalp and skin without any of that “leftover” feeling and literally vanishes into the skin. This topical healing oil is a wildly harvested nut of the Ati tree in the South Pacific and delivers antioxidant benefits and a luxurious feel on the scalp and skin.

IS HARMONIC HEALING OIL (NAMED HARMONIC TREATMENT OIL IN EUROPE) WATER SOLUBLE?

Harmonic Healing/Treatment Oil is not “water soluble” in the sense that it dissolves in water. However, it does not bind to the hair shaft, and thus can be rinsed easily from the hair with water.

SOME CURL EXPERTS SAY TO AVOID OILS AND BUTTERS, I’M CONFUSED!

We understand your confusion! The truth is, not all ingredients are created equal and how an ingredient is processed affects its quality and efficacy. Many of the oils and butters found in the market contain lower quality ingredients that are heavily “adulterated,” with synthetics to enhance performance. These types of inferior ingredients can compromise hair health and dull shine and vibrancy. We utilize raw, distilled oils and cold-pressed butters to maintain the quality, purity and efficacy of our clean hair care products.

WHAT TYPES OF ALCOHOL DO YOU USE AS CLEAN HAIR INGREDIENTS AND WHY?

We use rice grain alcohol. This emollient ingredient acts as a fast hair drying agent and as a carrier for our fixatives. Unlike other alcohols, rice grain alcohol is non-astringent, meaning it doesn’t strip the hair of natural oils or moisture.

WHAT PURPOSE DOES DENATURED ALCOHOL SERVE IN I CREATE FINISH?

Denatured alcohol (ours is a rice grain sourced alcohol) is used for drying, which is especially important for a hair spray! This non-GMO ingredient is a non-astringent alcohol, meaning it doesn’t strip the hair of natural oils or moisture. We encourage you to visit I Create Finish on the Think Dirty app. Our hair spray is independently clean rated 0, which is the best possible score.

WHY DO YOU USE PRESERVATIVES?

That’s a great question. Any product that contains water requires preservatives for stability, be it a face cream, a body lotion, and yes, even a shampoo or conditioner. While our super concentrated products contain considerably less water than most hair care products, we still must utilize clean preservatives like sodium benzoate and sorbic acid to keep your favorite hairbaths and conditioners fresh in your shower.

WHAT IS “SODIUM CHLORIDE” AND CAN IT DRY OUT MY HAIR?

The INCI name “sodium chloride” can be misleading because it sounds like table salt! We use natural salts, such as the Pink Himalayan Salt in I Create Waves Salt Spray, and Hawaiian Red Salt in True Enlightenment Scalp Scrub, which do not cause drying. You can read more about these ingredients here and here.

HOW DO SALTS DIFFER FROM OTHER “SALT” INGREDIENTS?

Pink Himalayan Salt and Hawaiian Red Salt are both natural, unprocessed salts rich in trace minerals and nutrients. It’s those minerals that give these ingredients their beautiful pink and red hues. Table salt, on the other hand, is typically refined and processed to remove any trace minerals, leaving only sodium chloride.

WHAT PURPOSE DOES GLYCERIN SERVE?

We utilize plant-based glycerin. It is a wonderful emulsifier and a great clean alternative to PEGs and MEAs and other synthetic emulsifiers. Glycerin helps give our products a nice “hand” or feel.

IS YOUR HONEY BEE-FRIENDLY?

Yes, we love and admire the mighty bee! We source and utilize only bee-friendly honey, which means it’s sourced from a self-sustainable, eco-friendly environment and bees are not harmed, captured or handled in any manner. Honey is a natural fit for our clean hair care. A nourishing humectant, it locks in and retains moisture for healthier hair, tames frizz and flyaways and adds shine, volume and light hold.
