We Celebrate and Support the CROWN Act

As we celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we’re also shining a light on The Crown Act, an important initiative we support through our valued partner, Women’s Voices for the Earth. CROWN stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.”

As a clean hair care brand focused on inclusion and acceptance, we believe that all women, especially black women and girls, preserve the right to wear their hair in its natural state. No one should be forced to divest themselves of their racial cultural identity by changing their natural hair or natural hairstyles in the workplace or in school.

ALL HAIR IS PURE LOVE

The CROWN Act was created in 2019 by the CROWN Coalition. It prevents discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending a statutory shield to hair texture and protective hair styles such as braids, locs, twists and knots in the workplace and public schools.

As an organic hair care brand founded by hair stylists, we’ve long held the belief that our hair is “the crown we never take off.” However, these statistics from crownact.com tell us we have a long way to go in acknowledging the beauty in black hair and natural hairstyles.

  • Black women are 1.5 times more likely to be sent home from the workplace because of their hair.

  • “I have to change my hair from its natural state to fit in at the office” is a statement that Black women are 80% more likely than white women to agree with.

7 DOWN, 43 TO GO

The CROWN Act makes it illegal to deny employment or educational opportunities based on hair style or texture. It first became law in California in 2019. Since then, six more states have enacted the measure: Washington, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. While this legislation is being considered for many at a state level, cities are starting to step up across the country; most recently, Tucson, Arizona is the 10th city in the United States to pass the ordinance.

HELP #PASSTHECROWN

We’re proud to partner with Women’s Voices for the Earth and the CROWN Coalition to end hair discrimination nationwide. If you would like to bring the CROWN Act to your state, sign the petition here. You can also find other ways to #PassTheCrown here.

We’ll continue to support the right of black women and girls to wear their crown naturally and rightfully as we celebrate the diversity and beauty of black hair and protective hairstyles. We join you as you wear your crown proudly. ~ Joanne Starkman, Founder, Innersense Organic Beauty
