Remembering The Importance Of Self Care

My mom, Norma, was the ultimate nurturer, she loved being a mother and I always felt very loved and cared for. However, she cared for herself in small ways, like soaking her feet at night. She was a kindergarten teacher and stood most of the day.

Norma was a big proponent of “good shoes” and always said “If you take care of your feet, they will take care of you.” My mom also loved to cook and bake, and always had fresh cookies on hand so that she could have a cup of tea and savor a homemade treat. Happily, we all reaped the benefit of something she liked to do for herself.

When my daughter, Morgan, was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I realized that I would be a caregiver for the rest of my life. But another realization struck: I was already a caregiver as a hairstylist.

FAST FORWARD AND AN ORGANIC HAIR CARE LINE IS BORN

Right then and there, my newfound fate thrust upon me yet another; I was driven to develop a high vibe organic hair care line that would support professional stylists personally, and professionally. Innersense Organic Beauty was born through that concept of self care and caring for the caregiver.

Most of us feel a need to give to others in some way or another. For some of us that need is slight (just try getting your teenager to help you on a Saturday morning!). In contrast, for others like my mom, who stood in front of a classroom her entire career, the need to give is deep and driving. However, when it came to her own self care, my mom just skimmed the surface. Sadly, she simply soaked her feet and threw together chocolate chip cookies. Oh, how I wish it weren’t that way! 

I wish we felt a need to give to ourselves just as deeply as we give to others.

TRULY, I BELIEVE THAT SELF CARE IS A NON-NEGOTIABLE NEED

I believe it is as simple as soaking your feet after a long day, or that cup of tea and the crunch of a cookie. Maybe it’s a nap or a long walk. Further, I believe self care is reading labels and deciding you’re the one that gets to decide what’s best for you, whether it’s choosing clean, pure beautiful organic hair care or dark chocolate chips over semi-sweet.

ORGANIC HAIR CARE WITH INTENTION

When Greg and I created Innersense Organic Beauty, our intention was to develop an organic hair care line with the purest of ingredients. In doing so, I wanted our messaging to be one of self love and self care. Of course, I wanted to support our users on a path of presence and a deep loving connection with their hair, and more importantly, with themselves. My intention was to give something even more than professional high performing organic hair care. 

To guide our users along this path, I created “innerflections” on the back of each of our organic hair care bottles. As a founder, I hope everyone who holds a bottle of Innersense Organic Beauty in their hands would take a moment to breathe and tap into a deeper place within themselves. My desire is to show our community that cleansing and conditioning is so much more than shampoo… it is a ceremony of self care and a celebration of the time we dedicate to ourselves.

MAKE MY SELF CARE CEREMONY YOUR OWN

It’s a beautiful way to end the day.

• Dispense 2 to 3 pumps of Harmonic Healing Oil into the palm of your hands and emulsify in your fingertips.
• Massage the oil directly onto the scalp using gentle, circular motions and disperse over the entire scalp. (This motion will stimulate blood flow while Harmonic Healing Oil infuses nutrients into the hair follicles.)
• I like to leave the oil on my scalp and hair through the night.
• In the morning, before cleansing, saturate your hair with water. Then, part your hair into sections to reveal the scalp. Take a quarter size amount of True Enlightenment Scalp Scrub and gently massage into the scalp until all areas have been reached. Massage for 3-5 minutes, taking deep breaths while enjoying the uplifting experience. Rinse completely then follow with your Innersense Organic Beauty cleansing and conditioning routine.
• I cleanse with Pure Harmony Hairbath. I complete the ceremony with Color Radiance Daily Conditioner or Hydrating Hair Mask if needed.

One of my favorite self care routines is using Harmonic Healing Oil to give myself a scalp massage.

Two years in the making, our latest product is formulated to bring health and balance back to the scalp. This pre-cleanse exfoliation treatment is formulated with Hawaiian Red salt and crafted to gently remove impurities without being abrasive. Apple fruit restores hydration and celery seed extract and peppermint oil stimulate blood flow. If you’re like me, you’ll appreciate the invigorating tingle of peppermint after a long day!
