“Plastic Proactive” Means Taking A Global Look Forward And Back
2020 was a big year for us. It marks our commitment to address plastic waste by revisiting our packaging choices and product design to minimize our global environmental impact. As we embark on this packaging journey, we’ve determined it’s just not enough to be “plastic neutral.”
While we make amends with the planet and commit to a plastic proactive future, we also pledge to clean up our past. As a brand committed to being plastic proactive, our eye is as much on the horizon as it is over our shoulder. We’re asking ourselves “what else can we do?”
A GLOBAL PROMISE TO COLLECT MORE THAN WE PRODUCE

We’re honored to be a partner of Plastic Bank, which builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities impacted by plastic pollution. It does this by developing systems that reprocess the materials for reintroduction into the global manufacturing supply chain. Our contribution means we’re offsetting five years’ worth of plastic packaging output and pledge to collect more plastic than we produce in 2020. That’s what we mean by “plastic proactive.” We want to be proactive beyond our own footprint and clean up more than our share.
Plastic Bank is helping the world stop ocean plastic while improving the lives of those who help collect it. It provides collectors income and access to basic family necessities such as groceries, cooking fuel, school tuition, and health insurance. Our pledge reflects a commitment to move beyond plastic waste and take social responsibility to prevent further plastic from entering our oceans.
This valued partnership with Plastic Bank uplifts coastal communities on four continents while preventing ocean-bound plastic in the most polluted parts of the world.
PLASTIC BANK: FROM REFUSE TO SURFBOARDS
Founded in 2013 in Vancouver, Canada, Plastic Bank has an honorable mission: Stop ocean plastic by gathering a billion people together to monetize waste while improving lives. The material collected by Plastic Bank is repurposed as Social Plastic®, which can be easily reintegrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain.
The numbers are astounding: Plastic Bank has recovered 10 million kilograms of ocean-bound plastic. That’s equivalent to 500 million plastic bottles, which is enough plastic to cover our beloved Golden Gate Bridge 80-times over. In addition, the recovered 10 million kilograms also extends to save enough plastic equal to the coverage of every square inch of Golden Gate Park (which is 20% larger than Central Park).
And the next time you remove a plastic lid from your coffee cup, remember its potential: Thanks to Plastic Bank, recovered plastic can resurrect itself in surfboards, sunglasses, travel and ocean sport equipment, high-end pillows and so much more!
