Hair Protein: 7 Questions Answered

There's a lot to unpack when it comes to hair protein. We're happy to see you're reading labels and asking us many questions. Here are 7 of the most common questions we receive on protein and the hair.

1. What is the difference between plant and animal proteins?

As we are a cruelty-free hair care line, we choose plant-based hair protein over animal protein. Like hydrolyzed rice and quinoa, these proteins are nourishing, replenishing, and lightweight. The animal proteins in hair care products you may have used in the past are heavy and fatty and often weigh hair down.

2. Which plant-based hair protein do you use?

We use hydrolyzed rice and quinoa in our clean hair care formulas, as we think they are the most effective plant-based hair proteins. These proteins don't contain salts or synthetics, so they're nourishing and replenishing without the side effects of overuse.

3. How do I know if my hair needs more protein?

Protein helps strengthen the hair, so protein deficiency usually shows up as dull, dry, limp hair, extra shedding, hair breakage, or body loss and bounce. As hair protein is essential to hair strength, they may help protect strands from heat damage, so protein is ideal for preparing the hair for thermal exposure. That's why we've included rice proteins in Hair Love Prep Spray.

4. How do I know if my hair has had too much protein exposure?

If you're using too many protein-rich products, your hair may become dry, brittle or hardened. If you experience this, give yourself a break and swap in a non-protein product as an intermediary in your clean hair care routine.

5. How is protein misunderstood?

There is a vast difference between natural, plant-based protein and synthetic protein and how they affect the hair. Many everyday hair care products contain synthetic ceramide-based protein heavy in salts, which bind the protein to the hair shaft. When overused, they can be counterproductive, resulting in a dry, brittle hair shaft and hair breakage. This is what the phrase "over proteinized" means.

Our clean hair care is formulated with zero synthetics and only plant-based hair protein free of salts, so they're nourishing and replenishing without the side effects of overuse.

6. Which Innersense Organic Beauty products have the most protein?

All of our clean hair care shampoos and conditioners utilize plant-based proteins.

7. How do clean ingredients replenish and restore hair that has had too much protein?

Our protein rich, clean hair care products return natural hydrating and nutrition back to the hair, reviving bounce and body in brittle, dry, over proteinized hair.
